Summary The maize (Zea mays L.) improvement program of the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) develops broad-based maize populations and, until recently, improved all of them through full-sib family selection with international testing. The purpose of this study was to estimate the genetic and genetic × environment variance components for ten of those populations and to measure expected yield improvement from full-sib selection. Mean yield ranged from 3.35–6.81 t ha–1. For five populations the average yield in the last cycle was higher than in the initial cycles. Several populations showed no improvement or yielded less in the final cycle of selection, either because selection intensity was low or because strong selection pressure was applied simultaneously for several traits. Variation resulting from differences among family means within cycles and from interaction between families and locations within cycles were significant in all populations and cycles. Results indicate that variability among full-sib families was maintained throughout the cycles for all populations. The large ge 2 / g 2 ratio shown by most populations suggests that yield response per cycle could be maximized if the environments in which progenies are tested were subdivided and classified into similar subsets. Summary Empirical results routinely demonstrate that the reduced Additive Main effects and Multiplicative Interaction (AMMI) model achieves better predictive accuracy for yield trials than does the full treatment means model. It may seem mysterious that treatment means are not the most accurate estimates, but rather that the AMMI model is often more accurate than its data. The statistical explanation involves the Stein effect, whereby a small sacrifice in bias can produce a large gain in accuracy. The corresponding agricultural explanation is somewhat complex, beginning with a yield trial's design and ending with its research purposes and applications. In essence, AMMI selectively recovers pattern related to the treatment design in its model, while selectively relegating noise related to the experimental design in its discarded residual. For estimating the yield of a particular genotype in a particular environment, the AMMI model uses the entire yield trial, rather than only the several replications of this particular trial, as in the treatment means model. This use of more information is the source of AMMI's gain in accuracy.This research was supported by the Rhizobotany Project of the USDA-ARS  相似文献

UV-B (290 nm) tolerance of Daphnia pulex, conditioned to four different food levels (Chlorophyta), was tested under standardized conditions with an artificial radiation source. Parameters measured were survival, percentage of egg bearing Daphnia and the number of juveniles produced after irradiation. UV-B tolerance of Daphnia pulex was found to be significantly improved with increasing food concentrations at all three parameters. The impact of the four different food concentrations on the photoreactivation system was tested with simultanous UV-B and white-light irradiation of Daphnia. Survival rate improved significantly with increasing food levels compared to solely UV-B irradiation. Photoreactivation had no effect on the reproductive parameters.  相似文献

Criteria for the evaluation of new drugs to treat obesity are important as guides for designing clinical trials to test these agents. These criteria must be developed in relation to the realities of obesity, which is a chronic disease associated with morbidity and mortality that is increased by visceral fat deposits. The observation that patients regain weight after stopping drug treatment for obesity argues for the proposition that drugs work only when taken and NOT that the drugs are ineffective. The analogy between the development of treatments for obesity to those for the treatment of hypertension is used to highlight potential areas for new developments. Several features of an ideal drug for the treatment of obesity are suggested. Criteria for evaluating new drugs include both primary and secondary endpoints. The primary endpoint for an anti-obesity drug should be weight loss, possibly by category of success. Losses of total body fat or visceral fat might be alternative primary endpoints. Secondary endpoints include reduction in risk factors for associated diseases and improvement in the quality of life. In trials where vigorous placebo designs including highly aggressive behavior modification or very-low-calorie diets were used, it may be difficult or impossible to detect a response to a drug.  相似文献

A field experiment on winter wheat in autumn 1991 investigated the effect of the rhabditid nematode, Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita, applied to soil at five dose rates (108 - 1010 infective larvae ha-1) immediately after seed sowing, on slug populations and damage to seeds and seedlings. The nematode was compared with methiocarb pellets broadcast at recommended field rate immediately after drilling and no molluscicide treatment. Slug damage to wheat seeds and seedlings was assessed 6 and 13 wk after drilling. Seedling survival increased and slug grazing damage to seedlings declined linearly with increasing log nematode dose. These two measures of slug damage were combined to give an index of undamaged plant equivalents, which also increased linearly with increasing log nematode dose. ANOVA showed that, after 6 wk, there were significantly more undamaged plant equivalents on plots treated with the two highest nematode doses (3 × 109 and 1 × 1010 ha-1) than on untreated plots, but the number of undamaged plant equivalents on methiocarb-treated plots was not significantly greater than that on untreated plots. Slug populations were assessed by refuge trapping and soil sampling. Deroceras reticulatum was the commonest of several species of slugs recorded. During the first 4 wk after sowing, significantly more slugs were found under refuge traps on plots treated with certain doses of P. hermaphrodita than under traps on untreated plots and more showed signs of nematode infection than expected from the prevalence of infection in slugs from soil samples, suggesting that the presence of P. hermaphrodita altered slug behaviour. Application of P. hermaphrodita had no significant impact on numbers or biomass of slugs in soil during a 27 wk period after treatment, except after 5 wk when slug numbers were inversely related to log nematode dose. However, by this time, numbers in soil samples from untreated plots had declined to levels similar to those in plots treated with the highest dose of nematodes. During the first 5 wk after treatment, c. 20% of slugs in soil samples from untreated plots showed symptoms of nematode infection. It is suggested that this represented the background level of infection in the experimental field rather than spread of infection from treated plots. The apparent lack of impact of P. hermaphrodita on slug numbers and biomass in soil suggests that its efficacy in protecting wheat from slug damage was through inhibition of feeding by infected slugs.  相似文献

The majority of clinical trials for gene therapy currently employ retroviral-mediated gene delivery. This is because the life cycle of the retrovirus is well understood and can be effectively manipulated to generate vectors that can be efficiently and safely packaged. Here, we review the molecular technology behind the generation of recombinant retroviral vectors. We also highlight the problems associated with the use of these viruses as gene therapy vehicles and discuss future developments that will be necessary to maintain retroviral vectors at the forefront of gene transfer technology.  相似文献

Changes in soil structure and in microbial population were recorded in a long term field experiment over the growing season of maize (June–November). Determinations were made on samples from plots which had received, for two years, the following treatments: mineral fertilizers, farmyard manure and three rates of compost. Seasonal variations were observed for the stability of soil aggregates, total porosity, pore size distribution, mycorrhizal infection and aerobic cellulolytic microorganisms. The stability of the soil aggregates changed in a similar way to that found for both mycorrhizal infection and the number of aerobic cellulolytic microorganisms. Physical characteristics were not affected in any instance by the organic dressings and microbiological populations were generally influenced only by the higher doses of compost.  相似文献
